Safe Anchor Trust operates from the beginning of March to the end of October with our boats sailing every day of the week. During this period we will carry around 14,000 passengers. In order to support this schedule we are always looking for new volunteers to join us.
As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to go boating regularly on one of the country’s most picturesque and interesting waterways, making new friends and have the reward of providing enjoyable and memorable experiences for disabled, special needs and disadvantaged groups.
“I got involved having come on a trip with my mum, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. After the trip she was still talking about it days and months later which was unheard of… and I thought there was something more powerful than just running up and down rivers on a boat. I’ve got to say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
With 5 boats in our fleet you will learn how to handle both broad beam and narrow boats. All boating volunteers will be trained to RYA crew standards with the opportunity to progress to the RYA Helmsman Certificate.
We are committed to safeguarding all our passengers and so we obtain references and carry out Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks on all our volunteers.
Even if you are not interested in boating there are many roles that you can still help with. Our boats need to be maintained and painted, we run a café on Open Days and we partner the Canal & River Trust to maintain our local waterways.
Volunteering with Safe Anchor Trust is a great way to learn new skills and make new friends while helping the disadvantaged in our local community. We value every hour that a volunteer gives and we want all volunteers to enjoy their time spent with us and our passengers. In return we offer support throughout your time with us, our friendship and an invitation to join us at our ‘thank you’ social events.
